Past meetings

  • Susan Stearns suggested a discussion about alt text. Writing good alt text is more difficult than most people realize! Please read this WebAIM article about alt text before the meeting and come ready to discuss (or listen to) alt text best practices.
  • Also at Susan’s request, we will take a look at the Hobbico.com website, which they have been updating to make more accessible.

Illinois International launched a new website last month. Marta Schneider and Veerle Opgenhaffen will join us to discuss how they incorporated accessibility into the design of the new site.

Accessible map tools – we discussed this a bit last month, but ran out of time for a full conversation. How do we make web maps (building maps or street maps) keyboard and screen reader friendly? Do you know of any accessible map implementations on the web today? Time permitting, we’ll have a couple new tools to share with the group, but please bring your own to share as well!

Bryan Jonker has requested we take a look at the intranet site for College of Education faculty, staff, and students. They have limited control over it, as the site is hosted & maintained by the College of Engineering, but are able to make some changes themselves and want to improve its accessibility as much as possible. This is a good platform for a general discussion about how to approach accessibility in situations where you have limited control over the code.

Bryan Jonker, Dick Detzner, and Keith Hays will discuss what goes into making megamenus as accessible as possible. There will be actual code!
